TECHNICAL OPINION:

·        The Cloud

o  We recommend using the Cloud as a secondary backup to having an on-site backup.   Word Processing, spreadsheets, photos and music can be stored in the cloud, but what about your favorites, (bookmarks), wireless settings, background configuration files for accounting and other software programs?   There are many files that you may not think of or be aware of that need to be backed up.  Having an on-site backup or image of your computers (and servers) ensures everything gets backed up. The cloud doesn’t do that.  The cloud service may have tiered rates which may incur additional costs for needing more storage space.  If the data being backed up to the Cloud is sensitive, ensure that it is secure.  What happens to the files if your cloud provider goes out of business or sells out to another provider?  Also check to ensure the servers where your files are stored is in the United States.  In addition, it’s important to know that although you may have high speed internet, the transfer of files along with file version checking to the cloud can cause significant speed degradation on your network.  This means that internet performance may be significantly reduced when cloud backup / restoration services are in progress.

·        Tablets:  Do I get an Android or an iPad?

o  One of the questions we get is that people want a tablet or iPad in place of their notebooks.  Neither are notebook replacements.   In short, not all websites will view the same way as on a notebook or desktop.  These tablets typically use a mobile version of a website.  Streaming vworks, but there may be more buffering than you’re used to on a personal computer.  Software functionality such as word processing may function quite differently on a tablet/iPad than a personal computer.  For example, Word processing, if you are an attorney and using footnotes, they may strip out of document which was created with a full scale wordprocessor when opened on a tablet/iPad. Discuss your needs with a professional to determine the best device and apps for your needs.
