COMMON TECHNICAL QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS:

·        INTERNET / WEB SITE POP UPS:

o       Q: You go a website and suddenly something pops up then lots of windows pop up.  What do I do?

o       A: Resist the inclination to close the popups!  Stop clicking the mouse immediately! Clicking on pop ups can install rogue software to your computer!  The first thing to do is to simultaneously PRESS CTRL ALT and DEL on your keyboard, then choose TASK MANAGER, then click on the TAB - APPLICATIONS.  Look for every instance of Internet Explorer or what ever browser you are using, if there are multiples of Internet Explorer running, click in the list Internet Explorer and CHOOSE END TASK.  Be sure to do this for each instance of Internet Explorer that you find in the task list.  Next, reboot your computer.  After the reboot, if you know how, clear your browser cache.  At this point the machine will hopefully function normally, if not, then it should be looked at to see if rogue software got into the machine.

·         MICROSOFT OUTLOOK

o   Q: A column heading in the Outlook inbox such as Subject, From or To column has gone away.  How do I get that back?

o   A: Hover the mouse over any of the columns and RIGHT CLICK, then LEFT CLICK on FIELD CHOOSER, find the field in the list that is missing, then DRAG it into the column area and let go.  Once it is there, it can be dragged back and forth for placement purposes.

·         MICROSOFT WINDOWS 7

o   Q: What setting should I use for Windows Updates?

o   A: Never update.  We don’t recommend using the Microsoft recommendation to run Windows updates automatically.  Even it you tell Windows update to download the updates and let you choose when to install them, the updates will install on their own.  The support calls we receive on this, go like this.  My machine is running very slowly, so I rebooted and now it says configuring update, do not power off the computer.  They should not have rebooted, we could have walked them into turning updates off which would return the machine to normal.  Instead, we now must wait out up to an hour and a half for the update to finish.  If it doesn’t finish in 1.5 hours, call and we’ll take next steps.  If it does finish, call anyway, so we can turn the Windows update function off. Typically, the process finishes and the machine returns to normal.  The problem is, this interfered with the users workflow because they had to wait for updates to finish in the middle of their day.
